In examining the history of Irish boxing, it is difficult to overstate the significance of the part played by Dublin during the formative years of our organisation.
Throughout the 100+ years since the inception of the IABA, Dublin clubs, boxers, officials and administrators have contributed immeasurably to the development of the organisation now regarded as one of the outstanding sporting bodies in the country.
In 1911, the newly constituted IABA consisted of 10 clubs of which 7 were based in Dublin. Officials associated with those clubs were to the forefront in putting in place the administrative framework necessary to support the fledgling organisation and to sustain its growth into the future.
Throughout the intervening years, a considerable number of prominent Dublin officials have given outstanding service in the development of the sport, not only in Dublin but in a very significant way, to the evolution of boxing structures at national and international levels.
Since William Carroll Senior took the first ever Irish boxing title, Dublin boxers have maintained a significant influence everywhere. Of the 100 boxers who have represented Ireland in the Olympic Games since 1924, 41 have come from Dublin clubs, coming home with a Bronze, 2 Silver and a Gold medal. In addition, Dublin boxers have earned an impressive 5 Gold, 1 Silver and 12 Bronze medals in the European Senior Championships. The exploits of many Dublin boxers have become the stuff of legends and some of those are described within the body of this website.
In a short publication such as this website, it would be impossible to do justice to the contribution made by
so many outstanding Dublin boxers and officials over the last century. What has been included is
intended to give a flavour of what has been an exciting and productive period.
